Participatory workshop at EUSEA25

The La Palma Research Centre team recently organised the Annual International Conference of the European Science Engagement Association (EUSEA) 2025. During this same event, and as the coordinator of the MACARONIGHT V project, the team also co-hosted a participatory workshop entitled “(Re)Assessing impact in large-scale science communication events – Experiences from around Europe”.

The workshop, dedicated to the future of impact assessment for science festivals and citizen engagement, was held together with the project coordinators of other European Researchers Nights. This meeting opportunity arose from the network that LPRC joined last year as a result of EUSEA2024 in Georgia. Therefore, it was a perfect fit for this year’s EUSEA 2025 edition.

Participants worked in small groups divided by topics. The guiding topics and questions were all related to the organisation of the European Researchers Night and included:

  1. What measures can help capture long-term impact for a European Researchers’ Night or similar event that is typically funded for 2 years? In which ways can responses and impact be tracked and analysed over time with a varying public?
  2. Which approaches can make evaluation more accessible and inclusive (e.g., language, length, format, etc.)? What can help measure the inclusivity and accessibility of public engagement events?
  3. What are some tools or approaches for different European Researchers’ Night or similar events to share, compare, and analyse the data they collect?

More than 20 people joined the participatory workshop, making it one of the side events with highest attendance!
