AGEO Celebrates Regiostars Recognition in Brussels

Out of a total of 266 applications, the AGEO Project – Atlantic Platform for Geological Risk Management Project, coordinated by Rui Carrilho Gomes, from the Instituto Superior Técnico, and where La Palma Research Centre played an important role, was awarded the REGIOSTARS 2025 Prize by the European Union in the “Green Europe” category at a ceremony held in Brussels. The project also won the award in the “Public Choice” category!

AGEO was an Interreg Atlantic Area funded project that took place from June 2019 to May 2023, which brought together scientists, local communities, and policy makers in an interactive natural risk management platform with the support of the European Space Agency‘s Copernicus Program satellite network and Citizen Observatories. This platform makes it possible to issue alerts, share information on geological risks, and promote educational content, helping to protect European citizens against landslides, seismic activity, floods, and coastal erosion.

AGEO brought together several partners from Portugal, Spain, France, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland, namely ISTAPGLPRCIGMEGSNIUBOUCDCEREMALNEGLNECCMLUMA and ULL, with pilot areas in the city of Lisbon, the island of Madeira, the Giants’ Causeway (Ireland), Brittany (France), and the Canary Islands. The project included the development of a user-friendly app to bring citizens closer to science, while promoting greater awareness of the role of ordinary citizens in identifying and preventing natural hazards.

During the event, representatives of AGEO revisited the project’s success story by presenting once again the pitch delivered to the REGIOSTARS jury, highlighting the innovation, collaboration, and regional impact that characterized the initiative. The ceremony also featured a closing speech of appreciation, reflecting on the achievements of AGEO and the strong partnerships built throughout its implementation.

The impact of AGEO continues to resonate beyond this recognition! To learn more about the project and the results please visit the project website!
